Hamilton Island ramps up its watersports

Hamilton Island ramps up its watersports

The team at Hamilton Island Marina are serious about watertoys, which are among the most popular activities on this idyllic enclave in The Whitsundays.

James Burrell and crew recently added more jet ski docks to their already existing infrastructure, which also comprises floating kayak storage for up to 20 craft, and a selection of water sports equipment manufactured on Queensland’s Gold Coast by Superior Jetties.

The Marina is busy all year round with 100% occupancy this time of year and as many as 1,200 visitors keen to enjoy the island lifestyle, according to James, which means his team have to be ready, willing and able to supply gear and instruct guests on the use of Stand Up Paddleboards (SUPS), jet skis, catamarans and kayaks.

“Although winter is the peak season for Hamilton Island, with southerners escaping the cold, we are in demand year round when it comes to watersports.

“We have a team of eight in our watersports team at Catseye Beach, running hobie cats, kayaks and SUPs. And at Qualia resort, we have a team of five instructors who cater to windsurfing and SUP lessons.”

Keeping the island’s equipment and infrastructure fresh and appealing is a major priority. “There is huge capital investment in the upkeep of the island, which has included a recent extension on the marina as well. Every year, particularly prior to Race Week in August, we introduce new activities, new venues and new equipment.”

The watersports team offers guided Jet ski tours around the island, conducting up to four or five per day. “It’s a very popular activity,” explains James. “We need to have a stable, reliable and durable docking structure for our jet skis as they represent a major investment.”

Superior installed its flexible floating modular structure using the UMD system with dogbone connectors. The ski docks a manufactured on the Gold Coast from high grade polyethylene with no moving parts, therefore they have a low cost of ownership for commercial operators.

“We have a long history of using Superior Jetties jet ski docks because they supply a quality product and excellent service,” says James. “Whenever we upgrade, we go back to Superior because their products always work. John Hogan and his team always have a solution to keep up with model of jet skis when we upgrade.”

Another piece of essential equipment which has recently enjoyed docking on a Superior pontoon is the island’s 5.8m Brig RIB, used as a tender and chase boat for events on the island.

James is anticipating a busy summer period, driven by the convenience of the marina’s location adjacent to the Hamilton Island airport.

“Our biggest selling point is direct flights from the capital cities. People can fly up, arrive at lunchtime Friday and spend the weekend in paradise. We are just 10 minutes from the airport with concierge service.”

Monaco Yacht Show – 25 super years and growing

Posted by:

The world’s largest gathering of superyachts was held 23 to 26 September in the Principality of Monaco. There were 121 boats on water and hundreds of exhibitors from the yachting accessory and luxury good market.

Superior CEO, John Hogan was there as part of the Australian contingent with AIMEX-Superyacht Australia. John observed that while business is on the up, “The superyacht industry does have challenges with targeting new markets and various companies are employing innovative methods find these markets.”

Of course, the Asian market is of particular interest as this is where the ratio of superyacht ownership in comparison to High Net Worth Individuals is the lowest. In China alone there was a recorded 2,378,000 millionaires in 2013, compared to the US at 7,135,000 millionaires, according to Boston Consulting Group’s 2014 Global Wealth Report. China’s millionaire growth skyrocketed in 2014, up 82%, while the US grew 18% in the same period.

Many of the Italian yacht brands and brokers such as Fraser Yachts and Burgess are setting up offices in China, Hong Kong, Singapore and Phuket.

Another factor determining industry growth and visitation is marina infrastructure, which still impacts on skippers’ decisions on where to visit.

“It also is a tangible limiting factor with a skipper confirming his advice for an owner not to go any more than 5-metres in length with a new build replacement due to too few berths available for their current 50-metre vessel in Australia,” said John.

Waterscape floats XCATS boat

Posted by:

Queensland’s Gold Coast recently hosted the sixth international race in the World Professional Powerboating Association XCAT World Series. The high-profile three-day event was part of a week-long party based out of Doug Jennings Park on The Spit, complete with hospitality and VIP reception, Entertainment Quarter, Food Bazaar, Kids Zone and Pit Alley.

Waterscape can be customised for any event

Described as “Formula 1 on the water”, XCAT (short for Extreme Catamaran) is one of the most challenging and extreme powerboat series in the world with the largest international contingent and greatest number of teams competing at spectacular locations across the globe.

XCAT boats are multihulls boasting two outboard engines with 600 hp and up to 5,000cc, hitting speeds of 120 miles per hour (193km/h)

The opening party that kicked off all the festivities and fast and frantic competition was held at the idyllically located Southport Yacht Club. Mayor Tom Tate, sponsors, teams, and the city’s luminaries toasted the event, which was a mighty coup for the Gold Coast. Guest enjoyed an authentic Aussie welcome with indigenous dancers, a traditional smoking ceremony, excellent catering and the on-water serenity of the Waterscape pontoon.

Glowing with its LED-lighting and appearing to shimmer above the water’s surface, the Waterscape was one of the stars of the evening, evoking positive response from guests eager to take in proceedings from its vantage point.

General Manager, Brett James said Waterscape added another dimension to the Club’s events and social scene and guests and members were drawn to it.

“We lit the Waterscape in orange, the XCATS’ corporate colours. The VIPs and delegates from Dubai said they had never seen anything like it! We had 300 people at the Club, and they were all eager to try it. Waterscape adds another dimension to our events.”

Since May, SYC has enjoyed plenty of attention around the Waterscape, designed by Superior to enhance the on-water experience.

The appeal, explained James is “feeling closer to the water”.

“On Waterscape, you’re right on the water, among the boats, under the stars, in your own private space, yet just a step away from the Club. People tell us they feel closer to the water. It’s unique. It’s peaceful. You can hear the band, but you’re removed. And everybody talks to each other. It’s a welcoming, social environment.”

“Our members took to it immediately and even during winter, it was full,” said James. “It’s very popular on Saturdays for private functions. The wedding market too is drawn to the Waterscape, instead of being stuck indoors, and we’ve held cocktail parties, corporate functions, anniversaries, car launches, business functions, boating events.”

SYC has added to its custom-built Waterscape with accessories such as aluminium capping, SYC and club sponsor logos on the glass panels, a bar, umbrellas, concealed power outlets and roping on one side for boat access.
