Superior’s Dubai operations, under Valtteri Vauramo of Marinas Performance LLC, have contributed the marina section of the massive, modern fishmarkets constructed to serve the entire Dubai metropolitan region.

Superior constructed its fourth RTA public ferry station for the Dubai Municipality, located on the marina for the New Deira Fish Market, at the entrance of Deira Island development.

The Marina will host berths for 50 boats from 12m to 25m.

According to Vauramo, the marina will serve as operational site for fisherman for their daily activities, enabling them to unload their fish to the newly built fish market complex. It will also have its own designated public water transport station for RTA water taxies and ferry, aiming to attract tourists to the area.

In addition to the RTA public transport station and the option to charge electrically operated dhow boats, the marina will feature state of the art MEP (marine electrical power) and fuelling system for fishermen.

“The pontoons will serve Dubai fishermen using the new fish market facility. The marina will be under heavy daily traffic of fishing boats and heavy wooden dhows. The pontoon system is equipped with bespoken deck level LED lighting and point accurate SOS system for additional security,” he says, adding that the project involved a number of constraints that required rigorous documentation of engineering standards to comply the requirements.

“It required the co-operation among the various parties including other contractors at site, as well as taking into account the aesthetic requirements of the client.”

The RTA station pontoons are specially tailored and have raised deck structure to accommodate Road and Transport Authority requirements for ferry traffic and up to 1.3m pontoon freeboard.

The RTA station is 32mx5m and was constructed using Superior’s heavy duty, SuperElite Pontoons, while the other parts of the marina were constructed using the Elite range.

“This allows the required flexibility to construction and shape /size of the units, as well as durability and safe operation,” explains Vauramo. “Each terminal used two pontoons 5m wide, and weighed over 55 tonnes when delivered by road. A 300 Tonne crane then lifted them into the water.”

Each access gangway has large heavy duty landings able to accept commercial loads.

Almost 90 percent of the new fish market is complete. A vegetable market and parking station will top off the development, anticipated to be complete by March 2016.

According to the vision of His Highness Shaikh Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, Deira Island Fishmarkets is part of his aim to create “an environmentally sustainable city”, applying green building methods and building to international standards as well as fulfilling public health and safety requirements.

The three-storey market contains 500 units of which 72 are stations for fish cleaning services, 75 for the meat and poultry market section, 140 for fruits and vegetables, 65 for dried food stuff, in addition to units dedicated to cafes and restaurants dispersed across the market complex.

The new market complex will have on-site basement parking with more than 700 parking spots and around 1,000 car parking spaces outside the market complex.

Faisal Juma Al Badawi, Director of Corporate Marketing and Relations at Dubai Municipality said the development combines both traditional and modern motifs. “The building resembles a traditional souq but is air-conditioned, clean and has restaurants and a hypermarket for visitors to spend their day comfortably,” he told local media.


Vauramo said feedback from the City indicated all stakeholders were pleased with the quality of workmanship. “They are pleased to see the quality of workmanship in reasonable quick time frame especially when most of the production took place during the hottest season (temperatures up to 50 degrees Celsius) and limited Ramadan and summer working hours.”

Superior and Marinas Performance LLC are working on various projects for the Abu Dhabi government authority within the UAE for national security, among them floating fuel stations, a pontoon for the new Presidential Palace, works at the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre and several marine contractors within Abu Dhabi, Dubai and the UAE.





Seychelles calling

Last week I had the pleasure of visiting one of our long term customers in the Seychelles, Eden Island Development Company. Seychelles is an island nation that lies a four hour flight south of Dubai and three hours from Johannesburg in the Indian Ocean. Eden Island is a beautiful complex five minutes from the airport and downtown Victoria on Mahe island. There are 500 villas and maisons in the final 50 Ha developed island which is connected to Mahe by a bridge. Each dwelling has a marina berth and we have worked closely with The Eden team and their project managers IOPM for over five years.

The team has been very thorough to ensure great architectural themes flow through the project but are still suitable for daily use. The design cues are based on traditional Seychellois buildings with steep rooflines and overhanging verandas to cope with the torrential tropical rains. The construction is of a high standard with solid concrete buildings and extensive use of traditional timber.

When it came to the berths the architectural team were looking for a subtle low profile system that continued the timber theme. The Superior Capri system fitted the requirements with the same timber decking as the verandas and a structural support system from a series of galvanised steel universal beams off the revetment walls. All of the floating structures are prefabricated from AutoCAD drawings with adjustable pile brackets. This makes on site connections a breeze and has allowed the teams in three different countries to stay on top of the project and deliver a simple solution.

On the economic front it has been fascinating to watch the nation develop so rapidly in the past five years we have been visiting. From a base of about four flights per week, there are now daily flights from three airlines into Africa and the Middle East. Eden Island itself boasts an improvement to the nation of over 7% GDP. Other new developments are springing up as well and tourism is an important growing industry. This was very evident on Friday while attending the awards at La Plage restaurant for the National Culinary Competition, with three winning chefs original dishes served in seaside splendour. Under the watchful eye of a 2 star Michelin chef, the local chefs produced an amazing original banquet that shows the Seychelles has a bright future with originality for those looking to escape for a unique experience.
